JHUMA DATTA
Jhuma Datta is an Indian landscape and astrophotographer whose work is rooted in a deep reverence for nature and a lifelong fascination with light, colour and form. Her photographs, ranging from dramatic landscapes and serene waterscapes to the celestial beauty of the Milky Way and night sky, reflect a vision shaped by patience, precision and contemplation. Her journey with photography began in 2008, but her way of seeing was shaped much earlier through painting, where she first learned to listen to colour, light and form. That visual language continues to live in every photograph she creates, transforming fleeting moments into enduring visual narratives. Over the course of her career, Jhuma has presented six solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and photography showcases in India and internationally. Her first solo exhibition was held in 2012, followed by exhibitions in 2013 and 2015. In 2016, life asked her to pause when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. By God’s grace, she found her way back—not only to life, but also to photography, a love that had quietly remained with her through every season. In 2020, she held her first exhibition in Delhi, marking a new chapter in her creative journey. Since then, photography has continued to lead her towards new experiences, international recognition and meaningful connections. In 2023, her work travelled to Tokyo, Japan, as part of an international exhibition organised by the Photographic Society of Japan. Beyond her own creative practice, Jhuma has contributed to the photography community as an international jury member for photography competitions and exhibitions, including Wikimedia Foundation, the Swedish International Championship, the World Photographic Cup and photography competitions in India. Through these roles, she has had the privilege of recognising and encouraging photographic excellence across diverse genres and cultures. Jhuma is also the author of a published coffee table book featuring a curated collection of her landscape and astrophotography, reflecting her artistic journey and her desire to share the beauty of the natural world with a wider audience. Nature remains at the heart of her work. Her connection with it is not simply an artistic choice—it is a quiet, enduring relationship; a form of meditation. Through illness, recovery and moments of stillness, she found comfort in the earth, in light, in colour and in the living textures of the natural world. Through her photographs, Jhuma seeks to share not only what she sees, but also what she feels—the poetry of light, the rhythm of nature and the beauty found in moments that often pass unnoticed. Her work is an invitation to pause, to observe and to reconnect with the natural world. Her journey continues to be shaped by gratitude—for her family, friends, mentors and honest critics, whose encouragement, guidance and presence have supported her through every chapter and every frame. For Jhuma, photography is more than a medium. It is a way of seeing, remembering, healing and giving thanks.
